On Habit Formation
So, you want to start *insert new habit*!
Forming a new habit is challenging. Research shows that it takes about 8 weeks for a new habit to become ‘routine’ and often individuals have many unsuccessful attempts before they finally grasp hold of the new habit. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Here’s my take on how to get past the first two months… okay… first two weeks with a new habit:
1. Write it out – yes, we’ve heard this before, but it really is the first step. Paper, pencil + pin it to the fridge. Be specific: what, when, where, and how. The more detail the better. Start small and you can always build once the first step becomes habit.
2. Understand and accept that there will always be roadblocks in your plan. That is okay. Pick back up the next day and be kind to yourself.
3. Program in rewards – small milestones make the process enjoyable.
4. Develop your support system – friends, family, therapists, your dog!! Get them on board and share the challenges, milestones, and successes of your journey.
Trust + believe. You got this! Happy habit forming.
